Have you ever wondered what a bench jeweler does or how they get started in the profession? Joaquin has been our onsite jeweler for the past 7 years. We are long overdue in giving him a proper introduction! Let’s learn more about Joaquin.
Joaquin was born and raised in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. His history with being a jeweler started very early on. His best friend and neighbor couldn’t come out and play until he was done doing his chores. His chores included helping his dad with the family business – making jewelry. In order to play with his friend, Joaquin started helping out too. Joaquin enjoyed the work so much that he would stay late to help and didn’t want to go play anymore.
This job continued through high school. Then, Joaquin went to a technical college where he studied how to set diamonds and gems and specialized in doing pave settings. He also fine-tuned his skills in designing carving waxes and sculptures. After graduating, he came to the United States in 1994. He started out in California where he worked as a diamond setter and did custom jewelry for 12 years in Beverly Hills. He then came to Washington in 1997. He continued working as a jeweler, honing his craft, and eventually started working at Johnson Jewelers, where he’s been for the past 7 years.
Joaquin has a passion for his job and loves it so much he doesn’t consider it work. He considers himself lucky that he gets to do his hobby as a job and has fun every day. He enjoys all aspects, from the simple repairs to custom designs, to working on a special wedding ring. He takes pride in quality craftsmanship and it shows. His favorite projects are the sentimental ones. When a customer brings in stones from multiple generations and wants to create a new piece, that is something special to be a part of. He also loves creating unique one of a kind engagement rings.
A bench jeweler handles many important tasks – setting stones with precision to achieve the best look, creating wax molds to ensure a final design is just right, resizing rings so they can be worn again, designing custom pieces that are one of a kind, and so much more. It can be a tedious, eye and back straining job, but you’ll never hear Joaquin complain. We are proud to have Joaquin as part of our team to entrust with your pieces with his vast experience and genuine love for the craft.

¿Alguna vez te has preguntado, que hace un joyero? ¿O como empezo en esa profesión? Joaquín a sido nuestro joyero por los últimos 7 años. Nosotros nos hemos tardado en dar una presentación adecuada. Aprendamos más sobre Joaquín.
Joaquín nació en Guadalajara, Jalisco, México. Su historia de ser joyero fue desde muy temprana edad. Su mejor amigo y vecino, no podía salir a jugar con el hasta que terminara sus quchaceres, que era ayudar a su Padre en el negocio de la familia. Fabricando joyería, para poder salir a jugar con su amigo. Entonces Joaquín le empezó ayudar y lo disfruto tanto ese trabajo que se quedaba hasta tarde ayudando y aprendiendo que ya después no quería salir a jugar.
Este trabajo condinuo hasta su preparatoria, luego Joaquín fue a la escuela de joyería dande estudió y se graduó como montador de diamantes y piedras preciosas con especialidad en montado a grano. Joaquín también afino sus habilidades en diseñó en cera y esculturas. Después de graduarce se vino a USA en 1994 el trabajó de montador de diamantes y piedras preciosas en Los Angeles, CA. También fabricó hechuras especiales a mano en Beverly Hills, CA. Después el se movió a Washington en 1997 el continuó trabajando de joyero perfecionando su oficio y eventualmente empezó a trabajar para Johnson Jewelers donde a estado los últimos 7 años.
Joaquín tiene pasión por su trabajo y lo ama tanto que no lo considera como trabajo, si no como su pasatiempo. El mismo se considera con mucha suerte. Ya que su pasatiempo es su trabajo y disfruta todos días haciendolo. El disfruta en todos los aspectos, desde una simple reparación diseño especial o un anillo de compromiso, se enorgullese de la calidad artesanal y lo muestra en cada pieza. Sus proyectos favoritos, son los que tienen un valor sentimental. Como cuando el cliente trae sus piedras preciosas de piezas de multiple generaciones y las juntan para crear una nueva pieza de joyería nueva, es muy especial ser parte de ello.
Un joyero maneja muchas muy importante tarcas. Como, montar piedras preciosas con mucha precisión para lograr el mejor look. Crear diseños en cera para que sea una pieza única. Hacer piezas únicas a mano. Hacer medida algún anillo para que puedan usarlo de nuevo etc. Es un trabajo que puede ser tedioso, mucho esfuerzo con los ajos y espalda. Pero nunca veras a Joaquín quejarce. Estamos orgullosos de tener a Joaquín como parte de nuestro equipo. Para confiar en tus piezas, con su vasta experiencia y genuino amor por el oficio.
